If you just reached Prestige 10 but have too busy of a life to constantly play, or you just want to farm some AB while you sleep, there's a way to do so without firing up your laptop or PC fans for the horribly unoptimised Garry's Mod that we're cursed with today! Full transparency - I learned this method while playing on another DarkRP server, but I don't have the guide link on hand. I'm pulling this from my knowledge that I dug up from a shortcut I had laying around for that server a few days ago. What does this actually do? (If you're not concerned and you just want to AFK farm, scroll further down.) To make a long story short - it makes your GMod look like this: And allows it to consume way less resources than normal: While still keeping you in the server. You'll persist through restarts, but server crashes or internet outages will exit you out. For internet outages, even temporary ones will kick you out, as GMod is incapable of maintaining a server connection even if you change your computer's network for example. It'd be worth checking the server's GameTracker every few hours if you don't think you're in the game anymore. This used to display a console so you could actually check this for yourself - not sure when this was deprecated, but you might know more than I do, so feel free to drop your knowledge or methods of your own in this thread! Why would you want to do this? I know a lot of people like to AFK to farm AB (as do I), so this is a way to do so without eating up system resources while getting on with your day. As someone who works from home and often has a lot of tabs open, I do this for a few reasons: I leave my PC with more resources to actually do my work - I'm often in code editors, game engine development environments or I'm playing other games during downtime. I don't feel tempted to play while working, and I still get to farm AB and playtime, so I don't feel so bad (FOMO is a real thing guys). How do I do it? Glad you asked! Before you attempt any of this, I highly recommend setting your GMod version to x86-64 - there will be guides on this forum telling you how to do that if you haven't already. Not only does it make this work better, but it also improves your performance when you actually play. Step 1: Open your Garry's Mod local files however you like! I just use Steam for this. Right click Garry's Mod in your library -> hover over manage -> press Browse Local Files. Step 2: Create a new shortcut for Garry's Mod Find "gmod.exe" -> right click -> press Create Shortcut. Step 3: Open the new shortcut's Properties, then the Shortcut tab Same deal. Right click the shortcut -> press properties -> find the Shortcut tab. Step 4: Add arguments to your shortcut to achieve the desired effect To be completely honest - I only know so much about the source engine, and so I don't know what 25% of these arguments do. Either way, here are all of the arguments I use: -64bit -textmode -single_core -nojoy -low -nosound -nod3d9ex -sw -noshader -noshaderapi -nopix -novid -nopreload -nopreloadmodels +connect 193.243.190.5:27034 All you have to do is find the end of your Target, and paste these in, so it should look something like this: Important: Don't delete the path of the target when doing this. Just put it on the end after gmod.exe and make sure to leave a space in-between the path and the arguments. Doing otherwise might break stuff, and that's inconvenient for you. "Why not just add these to all of your launch arguments on Steam?" A fair question! If it's not obvious - having to store these arguments somewhere then re-apply / remove all of your launch arguments whenever you want to AFK is boring and inconvenient. This way, you can just do it whenever you want and re-launch GMod normally when you actually want to play. Step 5: Apply and OK, then pray! The moment of truth! Save and OK out of your shortcut, then launch it and pray it works! The window will be unresponsive for about as long as it normally takes you to load into Aether + a minute or two since this instance of Garry's Mod will only use one core from your CPU. Honestly, you can leave it be. Make a coffee, do work, whatever - check in on it after about 5-10 minutes; if you don't see a map indicator in the bottom left that is the server's current map (refer to screenshot near the top of the post), try again or make sure you did everything correctly. Step 6: Become the bot you were destined to be! That's it! Go farm the AB and playtime that you always wanted to get while still doing stuff in the background! As a bonus - you can add this to your taskbar or start-up apps for extra and more convenient farming. I won't detail how to do that here, since there are plenty of tutorials online. Side Effects Every hack comes with its due course of side effects - this one only has a few, but I've compiled all the ones I know of below: When re-launching Garry's Mod after AFKing like this, I've found my video settings reset; this is very likely a symptom for those who use host_writeconfig in their autoexecs to save their current settings to GMod's config.cfg, which is read on startup. If you don't want to re-configure your video settings every time you play, either remove host_writeconfig from wherever or don't do this. I haven't tested this further because it doesn't bother me. I've found that on some rare occasions while checking GameTracker, it says I've been playing for less time than I actually have; this could mean that I reconnect at random intervals, but the jury is still out on this one. Like I mentioned at the start of the post - this AFKing method should (and used to) come with a console that you could read to track your game a bit better; I have no clue where this has gone, but because I'm AFKing anyway I haven't looked into it. If you use a minimised taskbar on Windows that hides itself unless an application has some reason to prompt the user for input, the small window might occasionally flash your taskbar up. I'm not sure why it does this or how (considering how low-maintenance this instance of GMod is), but whenever it happens I just open the window and minimise it again to put my taskbar back down. I've tried to play other games on Steam while doing this to variable success. Keep in mind that some games will think you're offline or not connected to Steam if you try and play a game while doing this! On some very very rare occasions, audio will sometimes play through GMod. I'm not sure why this happens (and it really shouldn't), but don't freak out if this happens to you! If in doubt, just mute the window. I don't know if this is compatible with Linux or MacOS. Sorry! I don't know how to end posts, so this is the end of the post. Thanks for reading, and good luck AFK farming!
